Modern human life in the era of enormous technological growth remains focused on obtaining intelligent and effective answers. Starting with smart cities, smart education, and smart campuses, among others, Smart-X concepts have begun to permeate many aspects of life.
Professor Yusep Rosmansyah, Intelligent Multimedia Technology at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) – Indonesia’s first technical high school – believes that all manifestations of the Smart-X idea have converged into one transformation-related system digital. He pointed out that digital transformation is the application of digital mechanisms to create a smarter system than before. In the field of education, digital transformation aspires to establish an exemplary and accommodating learning environment for all participants (Smart Learning Environment).
The notion of intelligent education emphasizes a better knowledge of education through the use of intelligent teaching approaches and technology in the educational environment and aims to produce intelligent students.
On the other hand, the concept of intelligent learning environment is based on seven major components of the system, namely policy and curricular standards, content, student profiles, pedagogy, interfaces, additional resources and human resources.
To illustrate ITB’s efforts to embrace this notion, the institution’s strategic plan includes the Education Transformation Strategy 4.0 (Renstra). This strategy is implemented as Tri Matra, which includes human resources and culture, technology, procedures and governance. This Tri Matra was eventually discovered to be seven strategic steps named Sapta Siaga which align with the goals of ITB.
Professor Yusep pointed out that it is impossible to separate the role of technology from digital transformation in education. Placing individual strengths and working as a team in response to existing difficulties will be the most essential aspect of organizations and businesses in the future.
Human expertise as human capital supported by appropriate technology is a resource that is constantly growing according to its capacity. Certain conditions must be met for the transformation of the education system into relevant intelligent education to be successful.
First, the connection between teachers and students improves the efficiency and motivation of the learning process. Second, unrestricted search is driven by the flow of information from various physical and digital sources. Third, effective educational institutions provide high quality educational services. Fourth, in a competitive world, lifelong learning is the most important capital for increasing self-capacity.
Meanwhile, ITB Chancellor Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, PhD said ITB focuses on education, development and mastery of technology. Initially, technical higher education at ITB included mathematics and natural sciences, as well as various fields of engineering, planning, art and design.
The second stage of development saw an expansion of the scope of the field to encompass the social sciences and humanities. These included areas of study such as business, entrepreneurship, development studies, public policy, and areas of socio-technological studies.
Due to the increasingly close link between the development of technology, cultural changes and economic expansion, a multidisciplinary approach to education, development and mastery of technology is currently being developed. .
In the future, the Indonesian Technical Higher Education (PTTI), which serves as the organizer of Tridarma higher education activities, will further improve the integration between teaching, research and community service activities, develop interdisciplinary models in the implementation of Tridarma, and strengthen more strategic collaborations with different players in the business sectors and with other organizations. Inevitably, building a system of innovation in the Indonesian education sector will be the result of a partnership between many parties with diverse beliefs and interests.
